Wild Swimming at Salto de Bierge

Driving to the top of the mountain whether to enjoy scenic landscapes or just to get a quiet place to relax is not so hard to come by — thanks to the Spanish side of the Pyrenees. A little more than 3 hours from Barcelona, we set out a ride to the popular scenic stretch of mountains of the Pyrenees, in the province of Huesca, Aragon, Spain.

It could have been a long drive but with friends on board, the 4AM early trip was pure fun. After the city exit via the express highway, the slow, quiet route started as we enter the municipality of Bierge (Biarche in Aragonese).

The idea is more than to see the beauty of the Pyrenees. As most of us are the adventurist type, we're curious to see one of the main attractions in the area for summer bathers — Salto de Bierge.

Salto de Bierge is a lovely place to enjoy the crystal-clear river waters of Alcanadre attracting adventure-seekers like us. The river rushes down creating a magnificent waterfall as it reaches the dam. Above the dam, the slowed down flow gives that almost still sheet of clear water extending a wooded area with plenty of shade for family picnics or nature walk along the river canyons to clean the soul.

High on the hillside, next to El Salto Hostel, captures all the majesty and tranquility of the Alcanadre River valley plus a thrilling look down from the dam with some large stone slabs in the area. The main highlight is "el salto" — the infamous jump from the top of the dam into the Alcanadre River base. Dare to jump? Thrill seekers here fall 9 meters down to a nice cool water base.

In high summer, this place is so popular with both locals and tourists but from an environmental standpoint, it can be a potential threat. So, to raise awareness in keeping the place clean, ensure to take your litter home and dispose of it appropriately in the litter bins provided in the area!

I got to watch two friends make a bet that they could jump from the top of the dam to the Alcanadre River base. I watched open mouthed when one of them jumped in. I didn't wait to see the end because I found my legs carrying me away from the scene. Don't ask me why though!
